The Shepherds of Bethlehem (Hardcover)

Heaven's greatest announcement came to ordinary men. Of everyone God could have told first about the birth of his Son, he chose shepherds, men whose profession carried so little social and religious standing that their own society did not consider their testimony reliable enough for a court of law. The Shepherds of Bethlehem asks why, and traces the answer back through nearly the whole of Scripture. From Abel's accepted offering, to Moses formed through forty hidden years tending another man's flock, to David's courage proven fighting lions and bears long before he ever faced Goliath, to Israel's own leaders condemned by Ezekiel for failing the very calling these actual shepherds never abandoned, this book uncovers a consistent pattern: God has always entrusted his most significant news to exactly the people with the least standing to claim credit for receiving it. Written in a warm, clear, and accessible voice, this is the sixth book in the author's Christmas series, and it stands complete on its own. For anyone who has ever felt too ordinary or overlooked to matter, this book offers a field outside Bethlehem as evidence otherwise, and a Saviour who still describes himself, above every other title, as the shepherd of his people.
