The Wheat and the Weeds (Paperback)

While everyone was sleeping, the enemy came. He walked between the rows of the newly sown field and scattered darnel seed among the wheat. Darnel is a weed whose early growth is almost indistinguishable from wheat. The difference only becomes visible when the grain heads form. By then, the roots are intertwined so deeply that pulling the darnel would uproot the wheat alongside it. Let both grow together until the harvest. The parable of the Wheat and the Weeds is Jesus' most sustained answer to one of the oldest and most anguished questions human beings ask: why does God allow evil to flourish in a world he claims to govern? Why are the innocent allowed to suffer while the guilty thrive? Why does the church contain so much that is corrupt, and why does the world contain so much that is unjust? The disciples asked it. The prophets asked it. We are still asking it. Jesus answers not by resolving the question but by reframing it entirely. The master is not absent. He is not indifferent. He is not incapable. He knows about the weeds, he did not plant them, and he has a plan for dealing with them. The plan is the harvest. This book explores the biology of darnel, traces the parable's deep roots in Old Testament prophecy, examines the history of the church's attempts to purify itself by pulling weeds, and develops what may be the most searching and liberating insight of the entire parable: the mixed field includes us. And beneath all of this is the promise that carries the weight of the whole story: then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. The master has not forgotten. The harvest is coming.
